What They Intuit

On Page 159 of his book, BEYOND ORDER 12 MORE RULES FOR LIFE, Jordan Peterson wonders at how interested the public is in what he has to say. He thinks common people are so little encouraged, that they hunger for a kind, encouraging word, and he fills that role, almost a father figure to many lost, struggling young men.

They intuit what they are, what is missing from their lives, and that they need to change for the better, but they lack coping skills and the knowledge of how to live, and Peterson articulates for them what is wrong, what they need to fix, and how to go about it: "Helping people bridge the gap between what they profoundly intuit but cannot articulate seems to be a reasonable and valuable function for a public intellectual."

Fair enough. If young people learn to maverize, then they will be so articulate, knowledgeable, and competent, that they will be able to lay out what is wrong and what they need to do for themselves with little exterior assistance. For now, Peterson is providing a valuable service.
