Happiness is hard to define, but we can identify it in others, and realize when we feel happy ourselves. It is hard to linguistically formulate but we know it when we see it.
Yes, we can identify happiness by the recognizing is not easily won. If nothing else, we likely realize when we are unhappy, so we can conclude that acting as we have done at least will not lany longer make us more unhappy, and that is a step forward, knowing where to start the search.
If one loves the self, life, God and others, these emotional commitnments should contribute mightily to our happiness.
If one is evil or does evil to oneself or to others, abusing and suppressing them some how, such sadistic behavior cannot lead to happiness and no can it be a source of happiness.
We must oppress none, and allow none to oppress us.
Happiness can be found, but not easily, and this happy state may be fleeting or intermittent.
