Here is a line from The New American Bible: “The Lord said to Moses, ‘Cut two stone tablets like the former, that I may write on them, which were on the former tablets which you broke.”
My response: Yahweh provided the Hebrews, and perhaps most or all of humanity with a moral code to live by. Humans, born depraved, yet born with free will, require an ethical code, a standard of moral behavior so they know what choice to make and how to act.
Humans cannot get to heaven on faith alone; each of them must also be good and do good, as best he can. Humans are born with free will, but their wicked natures will swamp and overwhelm them without a moral code, and they must be taught these morals by their parents and community, if a new generation is to have any chance of reunited with God after death.
Thus, the powerful symbolism of Yahweh through Moses providing the Hebrews with a moral code: ethical goodness accompanies spiritual goodness, and vice versa, and a holy and virtuous believer please God more than just about anything else.
Here is the same line from the Holy Bible (KJV): “And the Lord said unto Moses, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first: and I will write upon these tables, the words that were in the first tables, which thou brakest.”
