You do not need to be rich, refined and polished to be cultured, although these traits can mean that in some circles.
For me, you can be a bus driver and dirty poor and still acquire cultural sophisitication. If you read all you can, take classes, write philosophy as an amateur, study the culture of Haatians, Americans and native Americans, you are on your way to being a very cultured person.
If you study logic, maverize, and read even more and think and write about what you have read, you may be close to be erudite, and that is affordable, impressive and available to every American.
