The British monarchy may be like an obsolete, Victorian hangover, but, at a minimum it entertains the Brits, and it may comfort them with the continuity in face of revolving-door prime ministers.
Not
entertained but comforted. Power that is separated between the queen
and the prime minister steers executive power away from despotism. In
America where the President is our ceremonial royal leader as well as
our Commander-in-Chief, there is a risk that an autocratic, Imperial
President like Obama was could lead into tyranny, declining into a
socialist dictatorship. Let the Queen goof around at Balmoral: it is a
small price to pay for keep executive power decentralized, and keeping
people free from the clutches of a greedy, power-amassing tyrant.
