On Page 33 of her book, The Virtue of Selfishness, Ayn Rand warns the reader to be virtuous, and lead life of productive worth, and happiness as a side effect will come to the doer. To chase whimsically after pleasure or happiness as an end will bring about unhappiness over the long run, thus, hedonistic aims are futile: "Happiness can be called the purpose of ethics, but not the standard."
