Ayn Rand On Humans Building Their Moral Code

Humans have, throughout prehistory and down through history, devised and passed on moral codes and its constituent values so that people know how to live and the process of living well and doing well or doing good is the only thing that provides their lives with lasting meaning, a lasting sense of accomplishment. They are making it up as they go along, altering, amending and blending new valuation concepts with existing valuational concepts.

On Page 21 of her book, The Virtues of Selfishness, Rand seems to suggest that this moral code, inherited and impressive, is still being refined and modified down to the present day by people struggling to provide themselves with values that work and fulfill them: "Man's action and survival require the guidance of conceptual values derived from conceptual knowledge. But conceptual knowledge cannot be acquired automatically."
