I am writing a book on Mandeville and his contribution to egoist ethics. He likes luxury while the Christian rigorists were against luxury as making men effeminate and corrupting morals of the whole country.
As a moderate I am for virtue and I do not want to see excess luxury and excess pleasure. I think we can have prosperity, enjoyment of luxuries and wealth creation and its enjoyment without being enervated, addicted, materialistic or corrupted by it.
On the other hand, we should be not wasteful and should be frugal enough to live within our means and annual budgets as private persons, and as a nation.
The issue of luxury and its benefits and harmfulness can be delineated and mapped out.
