Prager has a rule that if we do not let compliments go to our head, we will not allow insults to go to our hearts.
We want to be confident and love ourselves, but high self-esteem and self-love has nothing much to do with what others say about us or to us. If we are inner-directed, secure, calm and at peace, temperate and cautious, we will not over-appreciate compliments, or overreact and over-internalize criticism.
It is important that we stay on an even keel.
