Joe Kennedy, the football coach, was fired for saying a private prayer on the 50 yard line alone after every game.
I believe in separation of church and state in the public sector, and he was a public employee. As a moral, social and political moderate, I believe that his private prayer on public property is a gray, minor departure from keeping the strong but wavering line between church and state on public property. Let him pray. Give him his job back with back pay and interest, and then use this doctrine for serious offenses of separation of church and state. Moderation was lacking here by the administrative literalists that fired Joe.
