There is a silver lining to 9/11/2001, according to many pundits: this tragic, deadly act of terrorism united all Americans. There is much truth in this.
But it also reveals an ugly aspect to human nature. Only in times of great crisis do many of us transcend our rivalries, our hatreds and our intolerance of those differing from us. In regular times, with group bigotry and group rivalry pitted against hostile, differing other group with it s counter-bigotry and oppositional, group rivalry, people cannot transcend their differences to unite, live in peace and amiable tolerance for each other, despite religious, ideological and political differences of opinion.
It is only individualists that are logical, moderate and tolerant of differing others. For its own sake, for the sake of the Good Spirits, for the sake of the common good, for their own personal sake and because keeping the piece is the civil duty of all, they will coexist and tolerate differing others. Unity for individuators is a reality, not a foreign or idealistic concept divorced from reality.
