I before have advocated that separation of church and state need not be applied in all cases, especially where historical and symbolic crosses like the Bladensburg Memorial Cross. Soldiers that fought and died for their nation did not do so in a faith vacuum. They were federal employees when they fought for their country, but God was with them in the trenches, and on their lips on the battlefield, every inch of the way.
God belongs in the public space, at least in such gentle, harmless, even uplifting and comforting ways.
