To receive God's grace fully, and be actually saved in this world and the next, faith is more important that doing good works, but both are vital to entering heaven, and their influence on each other is internlocking. The pious that are cold and unkind can believe that they are filled with God's grace but if their lack of good will and love that flows from it are not forthcoming, then it is arguable if God's spirit really has infused their soul, their body, their thinking, their actions, their entire being.
Those that are kind and good as secular humanists may still have a scintilla of God's grace in them that they will merit being sent to Purgatory after death, but lacking God's overt grace and welcomed presence in their hearts, minds and souls, makes a guarantee of eternal life and eternal reward a bit more chancy.
