Like many Judeo-Christian traditional thinkers (expressing a view now out of favor), I align the world the nature with Satan, and the world of the urban, human environment with God. This certainly is Eric Hoffer’s view, but the Envirostatists and Progressives see nature as wholesome, innocent and healing, whereas the world of humans is unnatural, corrupt and violent, the source of all evil that exists in the world.
As a moderate, I must qualify my statement above right away, lest misunderstanding occur, and clarity be lost: the world of nature is where most evil comes from and whence some innate goodness is originated, and the artificial world of humans is where most goodness is derived from, and whence some natural evil grows organically out of this world beyond nature.
The creatures of nature, if they were not bound, controlled, and directed by instincts instilled in them indirectly by God the Creator, and by nature itself directly, would have no laws governing them to streamline the rage, chaos, violence and lust for destruction that boil to the surface of their consciousnesses, such as they are, and which, these instinct-deprived monsters would then act out onto each other, and the world. The consequence would be the death or near death of all life in the natural world, where the natural order has been shattered by the elimination or absence of natural law governing that world, and guiding and maintaining the complex interaction among its creatures, its flora and fauna.
Human are strange creatures: half-beasts from nature (the source of our depraved natures, the prominent moral orientation basic and innate in us) and half-angels from heaven, good, loving, individualistic, rational and spiritual fine.
Our ability to speak and think renders us only partially controlled by the natural instincts attempting to curb our bloodthirsty, violent, aggressive, and predatory impulses, so typical of creatures of nature. Our abilities to speak and think indicate that we are conscious, rational and able to make freely willed, deliberate decisions about how we are going to act, choices that God will hold us accountable for. If we choose to do evil, we will be punished some in this world, and for sure in the next world. If we choose to do good, we will be rewarded a bit in this world, and for sure in the next world.
Because God gave the creatures of nature De’s blessed guidance as instincts operated through natural law acting upon their genetic makeup, they are able to lead fairly civilized, amoral or moral lives in nature. These organic robots do have some free will and reasoning power, but not much. They are not much responsible nor held responsible for the good or evil actions that they engage in.
It is different for humans: we are responsible and are held responsible by God for the good or evil actions that we undertake.
Humans need to adopt egoist ethics if they are to build strong, moral character for themselves so that they can will to choose good actions and carry them out. Humans need to worship good deities so that spiritual goodness wells up in their hearts, minds, souls, and bodies so that it is easier for them to choose to do what is right. Spiritual goodness undergirds moral goodness. Godliness warms the heart and secularism atrophies the will to love.
Humans need to individual-live rather than group live. Humans need to be civilized anarchists with limited, steam-lined hierarchies of all kinds. Humans need to self-realize. Citizens need to become supercitizens to keep things capitalist (prosperous), free and republican, without elites, class differences, and tyrannical government structures lording it over the masses.
Humans require elaborate moral codes, based on the Ten Commandments and Mavellonialism combined to learn how to live. Ethical values are given to us by God to serve as our useful substitute for instinct. Without moral values, and the right moral values, we not only will not know how to live, how to bring our kids up right, but we will not have a powerful enough rational justification to give us the strength and revolve to reject lives of sin, self-indulgence and predation in favor of living and let-living peacefully in a high civilization.
Adopting artificial moral codes, needing reintroduction to each new generation to help them build strong character, moral virtue and powerful, active personal consciences to guide people as they live their lives and make easily dozens of moral choices every day
Ironically, God is in the city and the devil is in nature. The city is sacred and supernatural, and nature is demonic, wicked, and natural. This has huge implications for restraining the excessive romanticism and anti-humanism espoused by the environmental movement.
Children need introduction, in each successive generation to God and moral training so they may not be lawless thugs, criminals that murder, rape, rob, lie, vandalize, and steal. We need to work and earn our bread, to not be lazy drones living off of the productive, or robbers using force to coerce others to provide for them, as Putin (like so many gangster-mentality empire-builders throughout history) is attacking the Ukrainians so that they will keep Russia afloat, rather than the Russians leaving all neighbors alone, exploiting their own bounteous resources at home to build a wealthy society while leaving neighboring countries unmolested.
