Dennis Prager in late 2023 narrated a Prager U video about honor our parents. He lists three reasons why parents are often dishonored and these and other elders are disrespected.
He points out that Americans used to be raised with moral should and the good moral values kept society decent and well-mannered, for the most part.
By the 1960s along came therapeutic advice from psychotherapists who pooh-poohed listening to shoulds, that the young need not pay any attention to them. The young should do whatever they felt like doing.
By the 80s the high divorce rate spurred many women to use the kids as political footballs to spite their ex-husband whom they loathed and wanted to hurt. Dads were alienated when kids brainwashed by angry mothers turned against the fathers.
Nowadays, if parents voted for Trump in 2020 and the kids voted for Biden, the parents are often banned from ever seeing the grandchildren over ideology, and this is heartless and cruel.
It is one pattern that shows the long trending decline in moral values among Americans; we are in a world of trouble.
