Only You

Dennis Prager often notes on his Happiness Hour that being happy is a moral obligation, and it is to be pursued rationally, to learn to cultivate and practice a positive, grateful attitude, until your emotional orientation becomes more upbeat, and it will happen.

Prager points out that only you can make yourself happy; it is not something others can do for you.

He is wise and correct, but I add that if we cannot make others happy or blame them for making us unhappy, we should do what we cannot to add to their unhappiness, and we should reject their hostile efforts against us to make us feel bad.

Dennis advises that we use our minds to curb our emotions so we can become happier, and if we apply our mind to our attitudes, it makes being at peace and more tranquil.

Just as we are responsible each for our own happiness, for me this is more evidence supporting egoism. Being happy personally is a private effort, is a moral obligation, our own personal responsibility. On the individual can make himself happy or moral, so that is an egoistic stance. That is the way things naturally are, so resolve to be happy and thankful, and commit yourself to not making others unhappy, so they can have an easier time of it working to be happy themselves.
