When Yahweh invited Moses up onto the Mountain to receive the Ten Commandments, it was a remarkable occurrence for several reasons. First, Moses and Joshua had sight of and direct contact with God without dying immediately or going insane. Second, Yahweh showed that humans can contact a divinity directly and survive the encounter just fine if the good deity wills them to do well and survive, or if they are holy enough and ethical enough, that Yahweh will let them see and talk to him directly without negative consequence, as a reward for their faithfulness to him. Third, this wondrous occasion is when Yahweh, a god of piety and morality, gave humans a moral code to live by, thus cementing the real connection between being holy and ethical at the same time to please God, for one must be both at the same time to please God.
Here is this passage from The New American Bible: “So Moses set out with Joshua, his aide, and went up to the mountain of God. The elders, however, had been told by him, ‘Wait here for us until we return to you. Aaron and Hur are staying with you. If anyone has a complaint, let him refer the matter to them. After Moses had gone up, a cloud covered the mountain.”
Here are these verses from the Holy Bible (KJV): “And Moses rose up, and his minister Joshua: and Moses went up into the mount of God. And he said unto the elders, Tarry ye here for us, until we come again unto you: and, behold, Aaron and Hur are with you: if any man has matters to do, let him come unto them. And Moses went up into the mount, and a cloud covered the mount.
