Exodus 31.14

When Yahweh is setting up the Sabbath laws in ancient Israel, He orders Moses to put to death anyone that violates the Sabbath! This might seem cruel and excessive, but these ancient peoples often required harsh punishment for them to get the point, and Yahweh really wanted His holy day to be preserved.

It might well be that Yahweh had to punish people harshly to train these ancient peoples to begin to learn to honor religious holy days, however reluctantly at first, pushed until general compliance was habitual and customary.

Here is this passage from The New American Bible: “Therefore you must keep the sabbath as something sacred. Whosoever desecrates it shall be put to death. If anyone does work on that day, he must be rooted out of his people.”

Here is that same passage from the Holy Bible (KJV): “Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.”
