On Pages 78 and 79 of his book, 12 RULES FOR LIFE AN ANTIDOTE TO CHAOS, Jordan Peterson warns his readers to cautiously and selectively be picky about who they associate with, and this is not the ruthless exclusiveness of a selfish social climber using and dumping less desirable people, to associate and grow in rank and popularity on the coattails of in-crown 'winners.'
There is ethical realization that one cannot only grow and be a good person, if one's peers and friends are of the same ilk. We are born collectivist and basically fallen, so this enclosure ties us to the frightening reality that those that are morally better are more easily brought down, than those that are morally inferior are lifted up by hanging out with social betters.
To grow and keep getting better, one must be careful whom one associates with so a better caliber friends inspire one to keep growing rather than backsliding, and this is what Jordan is counseling here.
