Jordan Peterson, on Page 85 of his book, 12 RULES FOR LIFE, AN ANTIDOTE TO CHAOS, states Rule 4: "Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not to who someone else is today."
There is great wisdom in this rule, and 15 years ago I wrote a book and one of original thoughts was the individual as maverizer is to compete with himself, not much against others, and that is what Jordan advises here.
We cannot grow ourselves, if we obsess about the performances of others, those greater than lesser than ourselves. We should learn from our betters, and provide an example for those less than ourselves, and then go right back to bettering ourselves constantly.
Our concern with hierarchy should be primarily with a hierarchy of personal development of decades of effort.
