 We have long been gradually working our way away from liberty and moving towards nanny state tyranny, especially since the days of FDR. Political elites are now so powerful that regular efforts by the citizens are often ineffectual in curbing their greed and power lust. Levin recognizes this on Page 9 of Plunder And Deceit: "The masterminds and their flatterers are progressively immune to regular democratic processes and pressures, such as elections and citizen lobbying, unless, of course, the electoral results and policy comport with their own governing objectives. Otherwise, they have an escalating for rule by administrative regulation, executive drecree, and judicial fiat as the ends justify the means."
