If you love the truth, embrace it and live it, then you may become quite enlightened. What you will have discovered and accepted is that the way that human nature operates with its full moral gamut on display.
Once you agree that complex human nature is held in check by moral rules, then you should not be surprised by what people do. We can be cannibals and wastrels, or we can be inspiring and saintly.
Any of us are capable of any action, from the worst to the best. Knowing this, we should be shocked and surprised not ore by what people do. Born depraved, people can be trained to withstand temptations. They can individuate, and work on being living angels.
