Here is this excerpt from The New American Bible: “When a man seduces a virgin who is not betrothed, he shall pay her marriage price and marry her. If her father refuses to give her to him, he still must pay him the customary marriage price for virgins.”
My response: It seems that this is a line to drive feminists out of their minds, that young, virginal girls belong to their father first, and then to their husband after he pays the marriage price to the father. It sounds like being sold into slavery but it likely was just and advanced patriarchal thinking in its day.
Here is that same quote from the Holy Bible (KJV): “And if a man entice a maid that is not betrothed, and lie with her, he shall surely endow her to be his wife.
If her father utterly refuse to give her unto him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins.”
