Fixed Nature

Human nature is fixed, especially the bestial, instinctive basic drives that propel us forward. What we can do is canalize and redirect that nature towards working, socializing and self-realizing.

Where our free will kicks in, as we strengthen our will and steer it towards noble ends, over time, we can grow, change and develop as good persons. Our weak nature can be bolstered, our reason can be strengthened.

As we learn to reinforce our higher nature, we can grow and change, but the basic self is still there, so in one way we are fixed, and then, in another way, we can grow and change, but it is no slam dunk, and lasting change comes slow, hard and painful.
