The Founding Fathers well knew that we were born depraved, addicted to power, and would support tyranny through large central government built up upon depriving citizens of their natural rights to power, private property, life and liberty.
For this reason they backed separation of powers in the Constitution to check abusive, centralizing, government growth whose possessors are intent upon depriving fellow citizens of their liberty and independence.
We want a federal government strong enough to secure our rights but checked enough to not be the main assailant attacking those natural rights.
