Science Versus Values

On Pages 165-167 of his book, BEYOND ORDER 12 MORE RULES FOR LIFE, Jordan Peterson points out that reality is not just objective. The domain of the subjective, of values, religious craving, is real too, he argues. People's private experiences and imaginings are subjective, idiosyncratic and relative, but too psychological, social and biological regularities emerge across whole populations.

The very existing of personal conscious activity, in the personal consciousness, of millions of people, separated from all others, and the emerging, governing patterns detected that apply over whole populations at different times in human history, do indicate that the subjective and values are ineradicable aspects of reality.

Peterson posits that the domain of values and subjectivity may never be understood through science, but art and metaphor may come close to capturing and expressing its essence, at their best.

The psyche or soul and the conscience for everyone is real and may be understandable only by the individual, Jordan suggests, and I agree.
