The Fatal Attraction Of The False Idol

Jordan Peterson wrote this headline on Page 168 of his book, BEYOND ORDER 12 MORE RULES FOR LIFE. Peterson, a ontological and ethical moderate like I am (He has not said this about himself that I know of), warns against worshiping any ism, that false idol, that religious substitute that is demonic (my word) at its core.

Jordan writes this: "The ideologue begins by selecting a few abstractions in whose low-resolution representation hide the large, undifferentiated chunks of the world."

Reality is complex, not simple and the pure, simplistic, totalistic cosmology proclaimed by the true believer is a sincerely held big lie that is mostly wrong, a little right, with the balance of truth about the metaphysical existence, relationship between and property ordering of the elements of reality (Yang or science and yin or values) is botched.

Peterson abhors the ideologue because he has perverted true religious craving, a need for a loving, cool, felt but reasonable temperate account of one's relating to one's selected divinity. Where religious craving is tainted and distorted, then an ism is constructed with true believing, a mob of zealous nonindividuators seeking mass movement control of the whole world as they spread their vile cause.

Peterson is rightfully leery of oversimplified analyses, and one-size-fits all (procrustean solutions) answers.
