The adage, that seeking after happiness is a major source of unhappiness, packs some punch.
If one follows God, leads a good and purposeful life, provides for one's family, serves one's nation in one or a couple of capacities, and self-realizes, one's self-esteem should be high enough that one should experience a fairly highly level of happiness. It may not be the truest happiness or perfect happiness, but it is not a bad life to hang your hat on, as the old country song goes.
