If the thrust of politically correct speech, within reason, is for Americans to be sympathetic, sensitive and respectful in their speech, that is good manners, and advisable as a way to build bridges, build trust between people, and to open lines of communication and cooperation.
The Left has begun to interpret intemperate, bigoted, rude or unpleasant speech, truthful or not, as hate speech that should be criminalized and prosecuted as vile speech, transgressing someone's civil rights, so that the speaker can be attacked, censored or even arrested for "hate speech". This is a dangerous step towards restricting or abandoning free speech, and that will not stand.
