Do Both

Put away juvenile ways and practices.

As a mature, functioning adult you must not act instantaneously based on impulse or temptation--at least not as a routine. If you are driving down the street and see a beautiful house on a side street that appeals to you, so you suddenly turn and drive down to observe and appreciate it for a moment--that is acceptable. If you hold the door open for a woman or man with their arms filled with packages, that is praiseworthy.

If the spontaneous response is random but kindly, do it. If the spontaneous response is selfish, or mean or cruel, or physically abusive, do not give in to the urge to carry it out.

Where one is moral and well-behaved, one's customary, protective self-curbs on how to behave on the spur of the moment normally kick in to keep one straight and not crooked.

Where possible, plan your course of action and behavior in advance, making your inclinations or desires match the golden rule, and comply with your moral code.

Be spontaneous a bit and in the right way. Plan everything else, and proceed in accordance with your humane plan. Then you should stay out of trouble, and even make the world a little better place.
