Yahweh tests Abraham harshly by commanding him to sacrifice his own son, which Abraham was willing to do.
The message is not that Yahweh believed in human sacrifice, but that sometimes our faith is tested to see if we believe when faced with hard times. Abraham passed the test.
Note that Yahweh's messenger called down from heaven to stay Abraham's knife. How holy and righteous will we have to become, before God's messengers call down to us from heaven? I believe we are a long way from that happy state of affairs.
The messenger adds that in Abraham's descendants all the nations of the world shall find blessing.
The Jewish and Christian theology and culture have influenced everyone on earth, so this blessing and prophecy have been fulfilled.
