I do advocate moderation in not all things but in most things, for the exception is true and real and does prove the rule is legitimate, applicable and holds.
We see this pattern play out when good, moderate, temperate, peaceful, well-intentioned people of good faith deal with true-believing extremists crushing all opposition, dialogue, and dissent as prejudiced and oppressive of their adherents and principles, if target audiences resist.
When zealots demand that you surrender unconditionally, immediately or be put to the sword in a commencing holy war, their vicious, violent, hyper-aggressive pattern, to be backed up for real with terror, torture, and murder, you have to meet fire with fire.
It is total war against these vicious radical; there is no room for honorable compromise or middle ground. We are all correct and all virtuous, and they are all incorrect and wicked.
We have to use violence against them and wipe them out before they wipe us out. That is the binary choice reality that they have forced on us. We must accept them for what they are, what they say they will do to us if victorious, and know that they cannot change unless completely, defeated or wipe out. Such a reaction to them is the only moral choice that we can make, and it is the exception to the rule of moderation—that pure fanatics have to be treated in kind.
